Update: It's Feb. 15th , 2009 and the Westinghouse SK32H590D is still performing perfectly. No problems whatsoever. I just bought another refurbished Westinghouse. That brings me to a total of 3 Westinghouse LCD's with not a single issue. If I see another one at bargain price, I'll buy it too.

I bought the Westinghouse SK-32H590D last week and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I read all the customer reviews on this site and several others. I took most of them with a grain of salt but some of the misinformed really irritated me beyond belief. I don't get why some of these dummies are complaining about the TV's features when they should clearly just read the owner's manual and/or ask a 6 year old child for help.
1. The DVD player will resume it's last position IF YOU SET IT TO DO THAT IN THE DVD SETTINGS MENU!!! DVD RESUME, = ON. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!
2. The clock and the timer will work and will not have to be reset daily IF YOU SET THE POWER SETTING TO NORMAL NOT POWER SAVER WHICH SHUTS OFF ALL POWER TO THE TV!!! READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! How do you think the clock and timer operate? Osmosis? Solar energy? Hamster turning a wheel? The TV needs electricity, duh!!! Do you unplug your digital alarm clock and expect it to wake you up in the morning too???
3 If you are going to complain about customer service not being great don't just say "we bought this TV and the picture was poor so we wanted to send it back." DEFINE POOR!!! THIS TV HAS THE BEST PICTURE OUT THERE!!! WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? WHAT DID YOU TRY TO DO TO FIX IT??? HOW DID YOU HAVE IT CONNECTED??? Sounds like operator error to me.

Now that I have that out of my system, on to the review. I bought this TV for 3 reasons. It was dirt cheap (9 afer rebate), the picture quality rivals the so called high end manufacturers, built in dvd player, and becuase it's a Westinghouse. I have another 32" Westinghouse which I have owned for over 4 years with not a single problem. I don't know if I am lucky or if Westinghouse just has a bad rep or what. 4 years without so much as a single dead pixel. I can't complain about that.

PROS: The picture on this TV is great. It's as good as the Sony, Samsung, Toshiba and for half the price tag. Also, the sound is amazing. I have a 42" LG which isn't half as loud as this Westinghouse and the sound isn't tinny or hissy either. I would list sound as it's second strongest attribute besides the great picture quality. Another pro, for me anyway, is that it is a Westinghouse. I love my other Westinghouse and I hope this TV meets or exceeds that long term reliability.

CONS: You will have to tinker with the video settings to get it just right but it's not a huge hassle. There are also several presets which are decent. I like to customize my own settings so this wasn't a big deal. The remote isn't great either but that's why they invented universals.

In closing, I think this is a great TV, especially considering the price. I would also like to reitterate how important it is to know what you are talking about before you start trashing a product and steering potential buyers away due to your own incompetence and lack of product knowledge. All it takes is 5 minutes to read the owner's manual and most of your problems probably would have been solved.

Haier HL22R 22-Inch Widescreen LCD HDTV (Black) Review

What follows below is a duplication of my review for the smaller, 19 inch model (Haier HL19R 19-Inch Widescreen LCD HDTV (Black)), but I did in fact buy the 22-incher for my mom, shortly thereafter, and the last paragraph of this review references what, for some, may be a significant difference between the two. Otherwise my experience of each unit is identical.

The Haier brand, from all I can determine, walks a fine line between budget and high-end electronics. My introduction to it was a 20-inch stereo flatscreen tube television I bought maybe eight years ago, a predecessor to the more current model linked here: Haier HTR20 20" CRT TV. (I saw it in the store and was so impressed with the picture that I almost bought it on the spot; but I decided to research the brand first. I found out that though the Chinese-based firm was just starting to crack the US market, it was the third largest electronics manufacturer in the world -- priding themselves, at the time, in some innovative TV technologies.) It's still a lovely set and still going strong in my living room.

My second Haier product was a countertop dishwasher -- very inexpensive and not made very sturdily, it seems, but great for an apartment, and if maintained well and positioned above the water source, a dandy appliance. Mine's five years old and, as with the tube TV, no problems yet. Haier America HDT18PA Space Saver Compact Dishwasher

So when I finally decided to pull the trigger on my first widescreen LCD HDTV -- a 19-incher for the bedroom -- the first place I started was Haier, because I knew the price would be right (and I found it on sale to boot). Unlike my previous TVs, this one I didn't check out in the store first, but purchased via internet, sight unseen.

It's a pretty unit on a non-adjustable stand, and as with any LCD TV of that size, you can forget about speakers of any quality whatsoever: there's simply not the depth and height in the design to produce the desired range of volume or resonance of bass. So, depending on your taste and resourcefulness, plan on spending anywhere from (eBay used) to 0 on speakers as well. (I bought a used Yamaha combo of computer speakers and sub-woofer; if you want something prettier I recommend the wall-mountable iLive 2.1-Channel Speaker Bar with iPod Dock (Black), which I got for my mom's 22 inch Haier [about which more in a bit]. Among other features, this Speaker Bar contains a sub-woofer, so the bass frequencies are resonant and full.)

I've discovered with most televisions, at least the ones I've owned, that if you like the resolution and clarity of the picture, that's your measuring rod; you shouldn't be disappointed if the color isn't to your liking, right out of the box, because it can always be fine tuned and almost always has to be. And sure enough, out of the box, the Haier 19 inch displays a lot of white where you expect a subtler transition into certain lighter pastels (i.e. flesh tones). And sure enough, the means to adjust the picture are within the menu, but you may have to go deep into a submenu to access the Advanced color controls (not as daunting as it may sound and you can always toggle back to the defaults). (There are also submenus for various other features, alarm, date-time settings, etc.) Once you've got color where you want it, the Haier 19 incher looks as good as any TV of its type and equivalence on the market. Which is the ultimate bottom line.

Flaws? The remote is too small and easy to misplace if you're not assiduous about keeping track of where it "lives" (a weird Haier "trademark"), and this particular remote is stupidly designed, with the "OK" (confirmation/enter) button small and off to the side, rather than centrally positioned in a way that your finger moves to it intuitively. Also -- when you're making adjustments, the menu display disappears way too quickly -- UNLESS you find the setting that adjusts the display duration. Which can be a little tricky (and ironic) because you have to move fast enough to get to it before the menu display disappears. The architecture of the menu tree and its navigation is hardly elegant ... but once you have things set up properly, it needn't be. And as with any other consumer electronic that does the job, once you're over the learning curve, there's no problem.

It's worth noting, however, that although the manual applies to several models (various screen sizes and equivalent combo units that also include an onboard DVD player), the features that should be general to all are not shared equally. While this 19-incher allows you to adjust picture ratio among Widescreen, Fullscreen, Normal, Stretch and Zoom (zoom being particularly useful for those stations that "frame" a widescreen image on four sides), the 22-incher (the one I bought for my Mom) only toggles between Widescreen and Normal. (Normal in this case = whatever image and aspect ratio the station puts out, pure and unaltered, so whether or not the screen is full has nothing to do with you or the TV.) So if you're thinking about a larger screen size than 19", it may be worthwhile to download the manual, inspect it for the features that matter to you, and do a little research.

Overall, I like this TV quite a lot. If you can live with full utility over cosmetic or operational elegance, you will too.

I received this from amazon's warehouse; whoever returned it clearly didn't tweak (or know how to tweak) the picture sets for optimum performance. After playing around with all the pix options - and there are a lot of choices - I ended up with video that was incredible....an amazing improvement on my 3yr old sharp (which I had thought was really great.) The picture is sharp, the colors natural, the depth and the blacks superb. For folks who haven't a clue how to set up the picture, there are plenty of sites like sound&vision or PC world or pc mag who list their particular preferences.
The gents who delivered were awesome....set it up and made sure it worked. Applause for amazon's service here.

Have no comment on audio since I use my own sound system.

Just bought this hours ago at Walmart for 1 taxes included. I bought it for my bedroom to replace a 720p 32" Polaroid LCD I bought 4 years ago. I have to say that so far I am quite impressed. I have another Polaroid 42" 1080p in my office that I use as my computer monitor, plus for limited movie watching. This Samsung blows that Polaroid out of the box for regular cable tv watching, however, for High Def material they are quite similiar. The one thing that I didn't expect was that the Samsung picks up digital channels flawlessly and without an antenna. The Polaroids I have don't and I have had to buy an antenna and they still have trouble picking up the signal. So far no problems with HD signals on the Samsung and I don't use an antenna. That means more than 20 more free HI Def channels for me. Nice! Yesterday I bought a Sony Blu Ray player (BDP-S360)for 5 and I hooked that up to my new Samsung TV. The picture is flawless. Don't really see the difference between 720p and 1080p.

The only downside I can think of now is the lack of HDMI inputs. No big deal though, I have a reciever that I run everything thru. Like the other reviewer mentioned, not much set up to do, I am using the factory settings for now, although I may tweek them later. Overall, nice addition to my bedroom. I may even switch it out with my Polariod and use it as my computer monitor, I do more TV watching in there anyways.

After about four months of use, I like this TV/DVD player and it fits my needs well with the built-in functionality. This is a very flexible device and I use it in my home office (which is also a bedroom), which is my only work location. For a majority of a work day it is used as a 2nd computer monitor, which comes in very handy with the multiple windows I tend to need open. The size of the monitor at 23" eases the stain. After work I use it as a TV or DVD player and find viewing is good from approx. 10 feet or so. My daughter sometimes guests out on weekends and gets a lot of use out of it. I would give it five stars but the remote is sometimes recalcitrant in activating channels or volume changes, detracting from a seamless operation.

The LG 37 is one of a very few 37 inch LCD units that are full 1080p displays. For those of us who want the best HD picture we can get, this is a good choice. The picture is clear and crisp and the audio is typical of sets of this type, which means if you want great audio, add a sound system. I found the controls somewhat hard to decipher, but once I got the idea, fine adjustments to color and sound were easy. I had no problem finding hanging hardware. Trivial complaint is the large red off light that I can do without.

I spent over 20 hours researching HD TV's over a two week period and visited the stores multiple times to view them. I considered plasma, LCD, and DLP TV's. In my opinion, this TV was superior to the others on the market. It was easy to setup and was up and running in no time. It has a perfect picture. It almost makes the room seem bigger because it is so life like... kind of an extension of the room.

I went to a couple of our local big box stores and took a look at all the flat-panels of around this size as a second TV.

Pros:
This model (and several other LGs of various sizes that we saw) definately had the most pleasing 'out of the box' picture quality. Several others had less vibrant images or narrower viewing angles or both. The Sony screens had very vibrant images that were pleasing from a distance, but suffered from jagged edges due to poor anti-aliasing. The image on this screen has great color, great contrast, and excellent anti-aliasing. That means the picture is not only great in HD, but also very pleasing in standard TV resolution.

Other factors favoring this HDTV are a great build quality and a screen that does an excellent job of maintaining brightness and clarity when viewed off-angle - even off-angle high/low.

Cons:
If I have one minor issue, it's that there the aspect ratio control includes no 16:9, proportional (non-distorting) zoom. Programs are transmitted in dozens of different formats these days. It's not that unusual to find a program that matches the full screen aspect ratio, but has a significant border on all sides. We have another HD set that allows me to zoom the whole picture up without any change in aspect ratio (because changing the aspect ratio would distort the picture). This set does not offer that adjustment.

My only other minor nit-pick with this product is that we have, through our local cable company (Cablevision), a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250 HD cable box. Although it's a breeze to hook up to the LG, using a single HDMI cable, the remote on the cable box does not have a code to program it to control the LG brand. Although I've found alternate codes that give most of the functionality, I cannot use the mute button on the cable box remote for this set. Although this is certainly not LG's fault, it is another minor inconvenience.

Conclusion:
All things considered, we're very happy with this HD screen. The small negatives are certainly outweighed by the excellent image and build quality - the most important measures of performance.

We were first drawn to Projections, because of the huge screens available for reasonable prices, but were turned off by the good possibility of having to purchase a new expensive bulb every year of so. LCD's were nice, but their price in larger screens was significantly higher than Plasmas, and they have the problem with the viewing angle. In the end, we decided to go with a Plasma no smaller that 50 inches, because we didn't want to feel as if we needed a "bigger" TV a few years down the road.

Before purchasing the LG 720p, we tried the same resolution in the Insignia 50 Inch Plasma. That was in our house for one day when we decided to return it to get something of better quality, which turned out to be this LG. The price of the LG was only a little more than the Insignia, but the quality was so much better.

The picture is phenomenal. I cannot tell any difference between the picture on this compared to Plasmas that cost 4-5 times as much. Even non-HD channels look great on this.

The appearance is very nice as well. The color of the case is "piano black" which looks really slick.

We bought the Init Wall Mount for this TV, and it works great. It was simple and fast to install.

The only possible negative with the LG was the sound. This was the one area where we actually liked the Insignia better. On some stations, we have to crank the sound up to 60 or beyond. With our Wii, it only needs to be in the teens. So the issue is probably more with my Cable Provider and/or Cable Box. But as I indicated, we did notice better sound with the Insignia.

There was an issue when we first got the TV out of the box and hooked it up. There was a white vertical line on the far right-hand side of the TV that ran the entire height. You could see some blurry images through the white, so I knew it wasn't just a aspect ratio setting. This line started going away the second day of viewing, and by the third day it was gone completely and have had no problems with it since (we have now owned this for about a month). Maybe it just needed to get "broken in"???

We also purchased a 4-Year Extended Warranty from the store we got this from, mostly for peace of mind on this investment. Their Extended Warranty does cover burn-in, so that is a good thing to know just in case one of the kids leaves it on. But hopefully we will never have to use it.

Overall, we are thrilled with this TV, and we wholeheartedly recommend it.

This is a great TV for the price. I don't understand the complaints about the sound quality, I've rarely heard a TV with better sound. With two component inputs, two HDMI inputs, RCA in, Coaxial video in, Svideo in, and PC inputs, you will be hard pressed to find a device that you can't hook up to this TV. It also has digital coaxial output for sound, which means that if you have a newer home theater system, you can hook the sound up through the TV to the home theater for excellent sound. This is a great entry level HDTV, and looks wonderful in a medium sized living room.

I have one gripe about this TV, however, and that is that there is no Universal Remote that I have found which will work with this device.

Also, contrary to another review, this TV does not support 1080p, which isn't a big deal for me, but makes its low price more understandable.

I bought my Proscan 32 inch LCD TV off of Costco for 0.00

It was the best deal I could find. I'm new at owning a TV, so this is a good starter. I've hooked up my PS3, Wii, and receiver to this TV, and it looks beautiful (I have not used the built-in speakers because I'm running all the sound through my home-theater system. This is the only complaint I've heard from other customers on Costo's website (buzzing in the internal speakers), but I cannot confirm this.). For me, the only downside is there is one burned out pixel. This is pretty much a given these days though, that at least one pixel will be burned out in an LCD screen. (I'm not too picky, especially for 0!).)

Great manufacturer ("Proscan")--I've never heard of them before. I think they're trying to get the word out about their product so they can get a foot in the market. (like Vizio did when they first started... first they were the cheapest, now they're well-known so they can afford to be as expensive as the top-brands).

Quick note: If you're going to buy any HDMI cables, DO NOT go to Bestbuy, Target, etc (and get suckered into forking over +). Buy them on Amazon.com for under .00 They work perfectly fine. I've bought all my electronics off of Amazon.

Hope this helps shed some light on Proscan! I have never heard of them before this deal, so there's my two cents.

I have had this TV for a few weeks now. It is the first LCD-TV that I bought. I am very happy with it. I connected it to one of my PC which I am using it right now to write this review as a PC-monitor. The resolution is great. I added a Blu-Ray internal drive for less than (player software included) to this PC and have been watching Blu-Ray movie with this set up. The pictures were stunning clear and beautiful on many of the movies.

In the beginning... there is a black border around the picture. For a while I did not know what to do. I notice that there are a few selections for the picture size: full, theater wide 1-3, 4:3 and native. Native gives the best resolution but with the black border while theater wide would cut off the picture but use all the screen. My PC equip with an ATI graphic adapter and the following was what I did to resolve the black border issue. If you have a different graphic adapter, there may be a similar solution.

Open Catalyst Control Center(CCC)
Go to desktops & displays
Right click on the small monitor icon on the bottom left corner
Choose configure.

Note: CCC showed that this TOSHIBA REGZA 42ZV650U reported a maximum refresh rate of 75Hz, which is the best that I seen on a LCD flat panel. There are many setting here, but do not apply any setting that your monitor do not support.

Select HDTV Support tab, and check the box that show the Correct Display Format that your LCD support. Click on apply after everything is set.

Other information: Vista 64, Catalyst Version 9.8, ATI Radeon HD 3870, DVI-HDMI cable, and this TOSHIBA REGZA 42ZV650U.

This TV has exceeded my expectations. The picture is bright and clear. I have not noticed any motion blur problems and true 1080p input looks fantastic on the set. The most amazing thing however is how very good dish satellite programming, at standard 480i resolution, looks on the set. There is no pixilation or snow at all. The quality is as good as a normat tube set.

Received the TV a few weeks ago. Amazon delivery was fabulous. They unpacked and set up, even helped take the old stand into another room for me.

Picture is great, easy to understand remote. I set up my Bose Wave radio for speakers and it is a few tads below surround sound. The sound quality of the TV is average to above average. However, since I had the radio I figured I would give it a whirl. I did upgrade to a Monster Cable. I am not really sure it was worth the extra cost. I am electronically challenged and hate change and I do not have any problems understanding this set.

I researched the internet for hours doing price comparisons, quality, warranty, etc and found this brand, model and size were the best value for my family and myself. If you are on the fence between two TV's, buy this one!
